Insurance Coverage Section Take Ten Q+A Series: Greg Gotwald - Insurance Coverage

Insurance Coverage

Posted on: May 14, 2019

Meet members of the Insurance Coverage Section with the Take Ten Q&A Series!

Meet: Greg Gotwald, Plews Shadley Racher & Braun LLP

What is the focus of your practice?
Probably 90% of my work is policyholder-side insurance coverage. I do a decent amount of environmental litigation, which overlaps with the insurance work.

How long have you been practicing?
I started my legal career 2004.

How long have you been in Indy?
I’ve been in metro Indy permanently since 2004, though I lived for a several summers prior to that. I had lived in Broad Ripple & Arden, but moved to Westfield about 4 years ago.

What do you value most about the practice of law?
I really value the problem solving that comes with my practice. There are always new issues or twists on old ones to figure out. Clients’ needs and wants are different. Helping figure out a solution and best path to achieve it is my favorite.

What do you enjoy doing when you're not at work?
Spending time with my family (my amazing wife and wonderful little girls) and our friends.

What are some of your goals for the section this year and what are you most excited about for the section?
I’m hope we can continue to grow the section. Insurance is at play in so much litigation. Even if you aren’t a “coverage geek” (that’s an affectionate term), understanding insurance is extremely helpful in non-coverage cases. I think IndyBar members will find value, even though it may not be their core practice area.

What's one piece of advice you've learned from your years of experience in the field?
I’m going to pick two (and I’d be surprised if I’m not repeating others here). (1) Always read the entire policy. You may think you know what is says. You don’t until you’ve actually read it. (2) Be civil. Our bar in Indy so special in this regard. Let’s keep it that way. It makes our lives much happier.

Tell us about your favorite restaurant(s) in Indy.
It changes regularly. Today, I’ll go with Beholder.

If you would like to be featured in the Take Ten Q+A series, send your responses to the above questions to Kara Sikorski at and stay tuned for future installments!
