Meet members of the Insurance Coverage Section with the Take Ten Q&A Series!
Meet: Melissa Hamer-Bailey, Norris Choplin Schroeder LLP
What is the focus of your practice?
I do mainly defense work, concentrating on environmental, construction, and professional malpractice claims, including insurance coverage. I also do environmental regulatory and administrative cases and cost-recovery for environmental clients.
How long have you been practicing?
Just at five years, but I spent almost two decades in environmental consulting and regulatory work prior to law school.
How long have you been in Indy?
Twelve years. I moved to Indiana in early 2005 to work for IDEM and moved to the Irvington area of Indy at the end of 2008. We’re now on our second “money pit” in IRV… and I still love my adopted hometown!
What do you enjoy doing when you're not at work?
Love spending time with my crazy family of two boys, our dogs, chickens and usual chaos… I’d say traveling, but that’s becoming a distant memory! I like to garden and have over 30 roses varieties and a raised vegetable garden. I also am a glutton for punishment in restoring historic homes (hence IRV).
What are some of your goals for the section this year and what are you most excited about for the section?
I think there has been a very interesting rise in participation with some of the IndyBar events with the advent of virtual networking and CLEs. I’d like to continue to expand those offerings, which are easier for scheduling even during non-pandemic days, as well as working towards IN-PERSON!
Since I’m a newbie, I’m following along to some degree right now. ut, I have an interest in helping practitioners not specializing in coverage work better identify potential issues and opportunities in their work, to better assist clients. I hear regularly from colleagues (particularly in environmental and construction work) that their claim was denied and they just took that as a final decision. But, often with a little work they can at least get a defense with reservation of rights. Just that change can make a world of difference for many businesses in surviving a claim… and is an opportunity for collaboration and education.
Tell us about your favorite restaurant(s) in Indy.
The Legend of Irvington. Hands down. Love their rotating menu at night, particularly in the fall and winter, and great wine/beer selections.
