IndyBar Statement to Members - Insurance Coverage

Several members have asked over the last few days about the status of IndyBar HQ following the unrest downtown. We proactively boarded the windows on Saturday after ours were miraculously the only ones on our block left unbroken Friday night. Many of our downtown members were directly affected by destruction of personal property, and we are supporting them the best we can. Though we’re grateful IndyBar HQ was undamaged, our thoughts are focused on the message undermined by those that instead brought violence. As an organization focused on the rule of law, we simply do not condone those actions, even in support of a larger social or political effort.

We need to come together as a community, to have meaningful discussion to identify and take steps to stop racism in every form: economic, educational, social, and cultural. Racism, and assuredly extreme violence against people of color, must find it has no place to exist in our society.

The IndyBar exists to serve members of the legal profession, and through our members we serve the community. Lawyers are problem-solvers, defenders of the rule of law. We spend our days seeking to improve the lives of our clients and our communities. We have an opportunity and a privilege to help. But the question we are left with is how?

We’ll begin, along with the Indianapolis Bar Foundation, by listening. We want to listen and learn. We want to go to work together. We can do more. We will do more. But the first step is to listen to our members and community partners to reflect on how. We look forward to hearing from you, and we look forward to doing more with you soon.
