Meet members of the Insurance Coverage Section with the Take Ten Q&A Series!
Meet: Meghan Ruesch, Lewis Wagner LLP
What is the focus of your practice?
The majority of my practice focuses on representing insurance companies in insurance coverage matters and litigation. I also do some defense work in a variety of fields, including professional liability, products, personal injury and cybersecurity.
How long have you been practicing?
Feels like eons, but in reality, 12 years.
How long have you been in Indy?
I grew up in Martinsville, then went to Hanover College and afterwards, I headed out east for law school at Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York, then practiced for about eight years in NYC. I moved back to Indy in 2015 and was fortunate to join the coverage group at Lewis Wagner, which is where I’ve been since I returned to Indy!
What do you value most about the practice of law?
While it may sound cliche, helping a client solve a problem is what I enjoy about the practice of law. I try to help my client look at all sides of the problem so that we can (hopefully) reach the best solution for all involved parties. While I’m not always successful, it isn’t due to the lack of effort!
What do you enjoy doing when you're not at work?
I bought a 100-year-old house in Irvington that was in good shape, but I’m always finding new projects to work on! I love spending time with family, friends, neighbors and my dog, Darby. When I’m not working or working on my house, I enjoy reading, CrossFit, excessive amounts of time bingeing shows on Netflix and checking out all the great restaurants, shops, and fun things there are to do in Indy. I also love to travel, and have a bucket list of locations around the world I want to see!
What are some of your goals for the section this year and what are you most excited about for the section?
What I enjoy most about my practice is that insurance coverage touches so many areas of the law that it not only exposes coverage lawyers to all these practices, but it provides us an opportunity to partner and collaborate with lawyers in every different field to discuss and educate them on coverage issues. I am looking forward to more collaboration amongst the IndyBar sections this year, and hosting some social and community events that will give the Insurance Coverage Section some more exposure.
What's one piece of advice you've learned from your years of experience in the field?
As much as it touches so many other areas of law, insurance coverage is still a niche practice, so it is highly likely that you are going to run into the same lawyers in the field many times over. While I am a firm believer in acting with civility and treating others with respect in all things, it’s particularly true in this area of practice. Treat your adversaries with respect—you never know when they might be sitting on the same side of the table with you!
Tell us about your favorite restaurant(s) in Indy.
Indy has such an amazing restaurant scene, so it’s hard to pick a favorite! Jockamo’s for pizza—Burger Study or Kreuger’s for a good burger—St. Elmo’s for a great steak (and shrimp cocktail, and a good old fashioned, obviously)—The Eagle for some Southern comfort—Bluebeard for a Whatever is On the Menu! There are a lot more restaurants I still need to check out, so this list will keep growing!
If you won the lottery tomorrow, what’s the first thing you would do?
I’m a little practical, so the first thing I would do is pay off all my debts (student loans and mortgage, I’m looking at you). Then I’d plan for some traveling, probably buy some property/vacation homes in places I’d like to visit frequently. Then I think I’d like to set up a program where I could offer grants/loans to various Indy non-profits and also invest in small businesses that are wanting to start up or continue to grow and expand in the city!
Greatest sports team on the planet?
