Meet members of the Insurance Coverage Section Executive Committee with the Take Ten Q&A Series!

Meet: Matthew Neumann, Plews Shadley Racher & Braun LLP

Where do you currently practice and for how long have you practiced?
I currently practice at Plews Shadley Racher & Braun LLP, where I have been for the last year and a half. Prior to that, I practiced at Hackman Hulett & Cracraft LLC for 4 years. I have been practicing 5 ½ years total.

What is your background as a coverage attorney?
I have worked on coverage matters on both the insurer and the policyholder side in various contexts.
What are you most excited about for the Insurance Coverage Section?
I am most excited about the opportunity to organize CLE events. Generally, most CLE events operate on the cutting edge of developing legal issues, which is a fun place to be. Also, hanging out with a bunch of insurance coverage nerds is always fun in my mind.

What has been the most surprising thing you’ve learned in your years as an attorney?
The most surprising thing I’ve learned is how much I love practicing law. I graduated at a time when the “lawyer bubble” was bursting, which resulted in a lot of negative press for attorneys and the choice to attend law school. That was an interesting context in which to join the practice of law. I’ve been thrilled and consider myself blessed to work at such great law firms, with such great attorneys and to discover how much I really enjoy the practice of law.

What has been your proudest moment as an attorney?
My proudest moments as an attorney have been delivering hard fought victories for clients in contentious cases. A couple pro bono matters in particular have been especially rewarding.

What is your favorite piece of advice or quote from your years as an attorney?
My favorite piece of advice is that there is no substitute for hard work. This is a lesson that I learned before becoming an attorney, but is especially applicable in the practice of law.

What type of community service or philanthropy do you engage in?
Currently, the centerpiece of my community service and involvement is at IndyBar. IndyBar is a wonderful organization and absolutely central in our Indianapolis legal community. I highly recommend all attorneys to get involved.

What would people be surprised to learn about you?
People may be surprised to learn that I am a failed musician, both as a member of a garage band member and as a songwriter. I guess you can’t win ‘em all.

Tell us about your favorite restaurant(s) in Indy?
My favorite restaurants in Indy include Late Harvest Kitchen, Recess, Black Market, Cerulean, and Bluebeard.  Go try the Sticky Toffee Pudding at Late Harvest. It’s mind blowing.

Which experiences in Indy are on your bucket or to-do list this year?
My wife and I just had our first son, Theodore Daniel, so I’m really looking forward to the spring and summer and being able to go out, enjoy the nice weather and hang out with Baby Teddy and Clare!
