The Indianapolis Bar Association is proud to recognize Melissa Hathaway of Lewis Wagner LLP as the association’s Paralegal of the Year for 2019. Hathaway will be honored with the award at the IndyBar Paralegal Appreciation Luncheon on Wednesday, May 29 at the Skyline Club. Show your support for the incredible paralegals in the Indianapolis legal community by registering for the luncheon here.

Hathaway has worked in the legal industry since her graduation from Ball State University in 1987, and she has worked at Lewis Wagner for just under 25 years. Her work at the firm includes criminal defense, insurance defense, personal injury litigation and transportation litigation.

Hathaway takes on the role of training new associates all while tackling her day-to-day tasks in the office. She's assisted with countless cases and trials and works on securing evidence and witnesses, analyzing complex medical issues and coordinating with opposing counsel, clients and other team members from pre-suit to trial.

"One could say Melissa has learned how to handle her cases from an offensive standpoint: she anticipates the needs of her team members, clients and opposing counsel before someone else asks her to do so," Bob Wagner, Of Counsel at Lewis Wagner LLP, notes in his nomination. "Notably, this is a skill that comes organically and has driven her success for the past 32 years. Melissa’s team members and the firm are fortunate to have a dedicated paralegal capable of completing projects with tip-top work product."

In addition to her work as a paralegal, Hathaway manages to find time to give back to her community. She is a member of the Shepherd Community Center, which works to resolve issues of poverty on the near east side of Indianapolis. She also volunteers for the Girl Scouts of Indiana and School on Wheels, an organization that provides one-on-one tutoring and educational advocacy for school-aged children impacted by homelessness.

"Melissa is a compassionate humanitarian," says Wagner. "She is a giver who never expects praise. She is a role model and true inspiration to paralegals, her community and to everyone around her." Join us to honor Hathaway and the daily contributions of all paralegals in the field on May 29
