The Commercial Court Pilot Project submitted its mid-pilot progress report to the Indiana Supreme Court. The report, which is available online, focuses on caseload and other statistics of the project, which is designed to bring about more efficient resolution of complex business litigation.

The mid-pilot report notes that as of December 1, 2017:

  • 215 Commercial Court Cases were filed, with 85 cases closed
  • 85% of commercial court cases involved breach of contract
  • 60% of commercial court case filings occurred in Marion County

“We are pleased that the Commercial Courts pilot project has been established and we hope that these courts are made permanent at the end of the pilot program. I’ve heard positive feedback from our members about having these courts available to move these more complex business cases forward to a resolution,” said Kevin Brinegar, President and CEO of the Indiana Chamber of Commerce.

The six participating judges are Judge Bobay (Allen); Judge Stephen Bowers (Elkhart); Judge Richard D’Amour (Vanderburgh); Judge Maria Granger (Floyd); Judge John Sedia (Lake); and Judge Heather Welch (Marion).

Judge Welch was recently named a Business Court Representative to the American Bar Association’s (ABA) Business Law Section. She will serve a two-year term, and is expected to share knowledge and provide input on a variety of ABA administrative matters.

The judges piloting the Commercial Courts project will submit a final report following the project’s completion in September 2018. More information about the project is available online.
