Without the guidance of a lawyer, navigating the judicial system or even finding the answer to a seemingly simple question can be both intimidating and confusing. Indy-area residents are in luck: getting answers to legal questions from licensed attorneys will be easy and free during the Indianapolis Bar Association’s Ask A Lawyer event on Tuesday, Oct. 6. To limit the possible spread of COVID-19, attorneys providing legal advice will appear via video conferencing at computer stations located at library and community center locations.

Individuals seeking legal guidance can visit the following locations for a free one-on-one video consultation between 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 6:

John Boner Neighborhood Center (2236 E. 10th St.)

Indianapolis Public Library Branches:
  • Central, 40 E. St. Clair St.
  • Haughville, 2121 W. Michigan St.
  • Martindale-Brightwood, 2435 N. Sherman Dr.
  • Nora, 8625 Guilford Ave.
  • Wayne, 198 S. Girls School Rd.

Anyone unable to visit a location is encouraged to visit indybar.org/chat, where attorneys will be available via the bar association’s online legal chat service from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The online chat service is available daily on weekdays.

The Ask A Lawyer program plays an important role in addressing the rise in unrepresented parties in the local court system. Statistics show that more than 50 percent of litigants in civil court cases are unrepresented. Ask A Lawyer gives individuals the opportunity to ask whether they have a matter worthy of court action, find out how to proceed or learn where to go for more information. More than 2,600 Indianapolis-area residents have been assisted through the program over just the past two years.
