Over 4,300 bears collected for 2016 Teddy Bear Challenge

By Teresa Asbury, Mallor Grodner LLP

On Thursday December 1, the Paralegal Committee held their annual Holiday Luncheon at the Sheraton Hotel in beautiful downtown Indianapolis. This special event is important to the IndyBar Paralegal Committee members, because of the annual “Teddy Bear Challenge.”

Paralegals from many firms in the Indianapolis area spend the entire year collecting new and gently loved teddy bears, and other stuffed animals, to donate to local law enforcement and emergency services. The Indianapolis Metro Police Department, Marion County Sheriff’s Department, Indianapolis Fire Department and Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services give these teddy bears to children they encounter during difficult, and oftentimes tragic, situations. Representatives from each of the aforementioned departments attended the luncheon, and spoke to the group about what the bears mean to them in their work.

The event was further enhanced by a performance from the choir from Broad Ripple Magnet High School for the Arts & Humanities. Denise R. Johnson is the Choral Director and she has done an amazing job with these kids!

There were 60 people in attendance at the luncheon, but the number of people who collected stuffed animals for our drive is so much larger than this number reflects. We were able to present more than 4,300 teddy bears to our first responders. Many thanks to all the firm representatives who corralled the teddy bears and brought them to the event; we could not do this without all your hard work. Quarles & Brady LLP was recognized as the firm collecting the most bears per employee and Ice Miller LLP took home the award for the most bears collected overall.

On behalf of the IndyBar Paralegal Executive Committee, I want to say thank you to all local first responders for your selfless work every day, and special thanks to all of the representatives who took time out of their busy schedules to have lunch with us. Thank you to Kara Sikorski and Lesley Hayes of the IndyBar for their tireless efforts in helping to plan this event. Thank you to the choir for their beautiful holiday performance and to the Sheraton for a lovely venue within which to hold this very special event.
