The 120th Indiana General Assembly is scheduled to begin the first week of January with the Senate and House going into session on January 3 and January 4, 2017. Legislators' main priority in odd-numbered years is to craft a balanced state budget for the following two years. In addition to a balanced budget, there are several other important issues vying for the legislature's attention next year including:
- Developing a sustainable, long-term state and local road funding solution;
- Expanding the Pre-k pilot program;
- Addressing substance abuse and treatment options; and
- Promoting a workforce to match the needs of employers.
Per Indiana Code, the General Assembly must sine die (conclude) no later than April 29. The happenings of the General Assembly will more than likely have some direct impact on your practice or career so it is important to pay attention to the Statehouse when legislators are in town.
