Happy New Year! Though often in family law, it may be more appropriate to say, "welcome back to the grind." I have spoken with many family law attorneys who enjoyed some much-deserved time off around the holidays to return to the office (or finally look at the emails stacking up) to be left with the feeling that even with the new year upon us, it’s the same as it ever was. Some of that is the nature of our business. Much though, we have the power to change.
2019 can be the year for us as family law attorneys to change the status quo. We have the power to change the way we prepare, the way we practice, the way we communicate with one another, the level of civility on display for the public and the way we assist and mentor young lawyers. This is not some pie in the sky call to arms; it's just a reminder. Throughout society, technology and the practice of law, we have already seen a change in the status quo. Many of us work remotely or only maintain a bulk of our files electronically. We communicate primarily by email and most of us smirk when someone asks if they can fax us. The status quo has and continues to change. It's up to us to continue the trend with some of the most important aspects of the practice of family law. We can go from old-school to a new way.
The same is true for the Family Law Section of the IndyBar. As an executive committee, we hope to start the year with a focus on changing the status quo. Are we doing things because we’ve always done them? Are we doing our part to change the culture in the practice of family law? Most importantly, we are going to focus on providing value to our members. I adamantly believe doing our part to change the status quo in the way we practice is one way to provide that value.
