Welcome to Tip of the Week! Judicial officers will offer a tip each week for members of the Family Law Section. Feel free to send suggestions to Mag. Kim Mattingly at

By Mag. Kimberly Dean Mattingly, Marion Superior Court

This week’s topic is guardianships. Do not treat a guardianship like just another custody case; make sure you and your clients understand the legal standard for prevailing in a GU case before your file a petition. Not sure what that standard is? Read on!
I tried a GU recently that had been consolidated with a pending divorce and decided to bone-up on the legal standard at the Kids’ Voice website. I had forgotten how much information is there, so I asked for permission to link to one of the resources for your Tip of the Week. Not only did I get permission, I got this: the staff attorneys of the Derelle Watson-Duvall Children’s Law Center of Indiana are available to all of us! Any lawyer or judicial officer may call for help with case law, statutes or other questions, any time, for free! As promised, the website can be found here and the site
has the extension for calling the staff lawyers if you need them.

Stay tuned for a new tip next week!
