If you have already changed your appearance form to comply with TR 86, go to the next paragraph. If not:

  1. You can find the new form at this link:  http://www.in.gov/judiciary/files/form-civil-appearance-efiling-86-1.pdf
  2. In paragraph 8 “Additional Information Required by Local Rule” add “I have reviewed the Commitment to Civility with my client and agree to aspire to its goals.”

This is a repeat tip, but remember to RELATE your appearance form to your client when filing. This step is critical; failing to do so means you will not receive notices from the court on that case. Do not be like the attorney in one of my courts this week that failed to relate her appearance to her client and then was overheard attempting to con the court staff into printing out copies of all she had missed since she filed her appearance. (When speaking to court staff, always assume that a judicial officer is within earshot. Always.)

I have received reports that mycase can be a confusing source of hearing times and dates, as it will provide a list of all of the previous settings for a case. When in doubt, consult the “paper” order that was signed by a judicial officer when the hearing was set. And by all means, call the court if it still is not clear.

Stay tuned for a new tip next week!
