Family Law News

I'd like to focus this message on an upcoming sign up activity that the Family Law Section is planning.  This is an attempt to pair pro bono and modest means matters with qualified family law professionals.  It is particularly timely given the new requirement in Rule 6.7 of the Rules of Professional Conduct that lawyers must report their pro bono hours each year.

Currently, we are scheduled on October 14, 2015 in the afternoon to have a sign up fair for modest means and pro bono service for family law matters. The section is inviting various groups to be present to match a lawyer or GAL or mediator to a case. The work provided as a result of this should be reportable as pro bono, or reduced fee, as is required under the new rules.

It is my hope that this Show Up to Sign Up fair will become an ongoing activity for the Family Law Section matching those in need to those in a unique position as family law professionals to help. The purpose is not to substitute for the organizations, groups and court processes already in place, but rather to provide another avenue for those organizations, groups and processes to find qualified assistance in meeting their goals.  In this manner, members of the Family Law Section can meet the new requirements on reporting our pro bono hours but also give back to our community in a fashion that takes advantage of our education and skills.

Please consider taking time to sign up on October 14, 2015 at the Indianapolis Bar Association between 4 and 5 p.m. Afterward, we will have a social/networking event to reward those who attend and offer their services to our community.
