Hello IndyBar Family Law Section members and those of you just checking in. This past year, you've heard from a variety of section members in monthly blog posts, and this month is my turn. I wanted to take this time to tell you more about myself and some of the anticipated activities and events for the coming year.

I am your incoming chair of the Family Law Section Executive Committee of the Indianapolis Bar Association. First order of business: We need to find a good acronym for that title to so that it will fit on a resume. For the past several years, I’ve served as an at large member for the committee and as the secretary of the committee.

At the recent IndyBar leadership retreat, section leaders were tasked with focusing their vision for their year as chair. I realized that I am lucky enough to be in a leadership position for one of the most dynamic sections of the IndyBar. So, like a doctor, my first move is to do no harm. Our section already has almost monthly CLEs, multiple networking opportunities and great participation from its members as speakers, leaders and attendees at bar functions. I don’t want to negatively impact that, so we are planning a similar number of events in 2015 as we had in 2014.

However, I do see an opportunity for our section to grow in a few key areas. The first is simply to get more participation from young lawyers and lawyers who might have, over the years, drifted away from enjoying the benefits of the Family Law Section. So, I challenge each of you to introduce or re-introduce fellow lawyers you practice with to Family law Section events. If you have a case with a lawyer you haven’t crossed paths with before, invite them to the next Family Law Section CLE. As I said, we have events frequently, so put them to good use and grow your network in the process.

Second, our section is filled with so many charitable people and businesses that I’d like to work on organizing that into something we can include in The Indiana Lawyer like many of the other sections were able to do this past issue. You can view the article here. I know that we as a section can compete with the philanthropy of the other sections. This is our year to do so. Keep checking back for opportunities to give back as the year progresses.

Third, we are hoping to team up with other IndyBar sections and divisions with networking, social activities and/or CLEs. We have already received requests to work together and hope that this collaboration will benefit their section as well as our section.

Fourth, we are going to look at the possibility of giving out a Family Law Section award to a deserving member or firm. We haven’t gotten too far in the planning, but again, stay tuned for more information as the year progresses.

I look forward to working with you in the coming year and to working on your behalf. If any of you have suggestions on the above or ideas or concerns you feel the Family Law Section should be dealing with, please contact me or another executive committee member so that we can address it. It is my privilege to serve as chair for the Family Law Section for 2015.
