The IndyBar Environmental Law Section is excited to welcome Judge James Joven to the executive committee. Having a judge on our committee will give our members a valued viewpoint on environmental and litigation issues. I was able to virtually sit down with Judge Joven to learn more about his career path and what he is up to when he isn’t wearing his black robe.
Judge Joven is a Marion County Superior Court judge. The Mass Tort and Environmental dockets were transferred to Court D13 at the start of 2021. Before that, he served as a judge in Traffic Court and Marion County Small Claims Court. While working as a small claims court judge, he also maintained a private practice at Lewis and Wilkins. Judge Joven has worked as the Indiana Securities Commissioner and as a Deputy Attorney General. Rounding out his government service, Judge Joven also worked on brownfields redevelopment for Indianapolis Mayor Stephen Goldsmith. The Judge started his legal career clerking for the Supreme Court of Indiana and then as an associate at Plews Shadley Racher & Braun LLP, where he handled everything from appellate work to fish kill cases to a class action against tobacco manufacturers. In short, Judge Joven has held a myriad of legal positions in private and public practice.
But…when he isn’t practicing law? You’re likely to find Judge Joven on the volleyball court—or on the sidelines of the court. He has coached nearly every level of boys’ volleyball in Indianapolis. Currently, Judge Joven turns into Head Coach Joven for the Bishop Chatard Trojans Boys Volleyball Team most nights. As of the date of this blog, his team is ranked #8 in the IBVCA Coaches Poll. Boys’ volleyball was not an option when the Judge was growing up, so he honed his play in open gyms. Now boys’ high school volleyball is one of the fastest growing sports in the country.
Please give an environmentally friendly welcome to Judge James Joven—newest member of the executive committee!
