Ben Caughey will serve as chair of the section in 2014. Caughey is also a past chair of the IndyBar's Young Lawyers Division. Learn more about Ben below and see his full bio here.

Ben Caughey is a partner in Ice Miller's Bankruptcy Practice Group and concentrates his practice in the areas of commercial litigation, bankruptcy and debt workouts. He advises clients concerning a wide variety of types commercial disputes and regularly assists his clients in addressing the complexities of financial distress.

Caughey draws on his litigation experience as well as his understanding of the needs of businesses and knowledge of secured transactions to represent a variety of clients in bankruptcy and commercial law matters. This experience allows him to provide legal advice to clients while maintaining the flexibility and strategic thinking needed to work towards practical solutions to financial issues.

Caughey has a broad ranging practice in all aspects of insolvency matters. He regularly represents debtors, creditors and creditors committees in complex commercial Chapter 11 cases in diverse industries (such as hotel and hospitality, agricultural, steel, automotive, airline, retail, real estate, food service and medical). Caughey has handled all aspects of Chapter 11 proceedings, including pre-bankruptcy planning, plan confirmation, claims disputes, and hundreds of preference and fraudulent transfer actions. He has also frequently assisted clients in purchasing assets out of bankruptcy proceedings and receiverships and has steered his clients through each step of these unique transactions.

Aside from his bankruptcy experience, he routinely assists clients in out-of-court workouts, out-of-court restructurings, and receiverships. He frequently represents creditors in the defense and prosecution of commercial law disputes (including actions seeking to enforce and collect upon unpaid obligations) and also frequently helps clients comply with wage garnishment, consumer credit and lending laws.

Caughey works to help his clients understand their rights and aggressively pursue them, while at the same time working to find business solutions to disputes.

He speaks regularly on bankruptcy, commercial law, and real estate insolvency issues for clients and for members of the bar and is very active in the Indianapolis Bar Association as well as civic and charitable organizations in Indianapolis. Caughey is admitted to practice law in the state of Indiana and in numerous federal courts.

Caughey graduated from the University of Illinois where he received his Bachelor of Science in secondary education, magna cum laude, in 1997. Prior to law school, he was a seventh grade teacher and coach. He obtained his juris doctorate from Indiana University Maurer School of Law where he graduated, cum laude, in 2001.
