The ADR Section will host "Considerations When Mediating with Pro Se Parties" on Thursday, December 3 from noon to 1 p.m. at the IndyBar Education Center. At this CLE, you'll effectively mediate without attorneys and avoid the pitfalls that often accompany mediating with pro se participant. The panel, which features Ms. Carol J. Romine, Romine Family Law; Ms. Kimberly Van Valer, Kim Van Valer Dispute Resolution; Mr. Jim Johnson, Heartland Family Mediators LLC, will explore the ethical limits and duties when mediating with pro se parties. We all know that mediators cannot give legal advice, but what is the difference between “legal advice” and “legal information”? The panel will also share tips on effectively mediating without the assistance of attorneys. Other ethical considerations to be discussed include obtaining informed consent, maintaining impartiality, balancing power and promoting party self-determination. There will also be a discussion of the ethics of advertising and targeting clientele.
