The tragedy at Astroworld, a popular festival-style concert headlined by Travis Scott at which eight people died and over 300 suffered at least minor injuries on November 5, 2021, will be litigated for years to come. Newly uncovered information suggests that the venue’s insurance umbrella is capped at $25 million, which may leave NRG Park exposed to hundreds of millions of dollars in potential liability.

The Indianapolis legal community thrives because of the dedication of many esteemed individuals who, using their unique talents, work together to advance justice and lead positive change. Each year the Indianapolis Bar Foundation honors such lawyers for their dedication to the law by bestowing on them the designation of Distinguished Fellow and Distinguished Life Fellow.

Jeff Heck, who currently serves as the Pro Bono Project Director at Indiana Legal Services (ILS) Inc., recently highlighted the backlog and avalanche of new eviction filings in Marion County and across Indiana. A high number of evictions and tenants who cannot afford to pay rent, let alone hire an attorney, is not a new development in Indiana. The eviction problem, however, has been vastly multiplied as one of the consequences of COVID-19. Jeff and his ILS staff have devoted countless hours in the past several months to staff and be available to provide pro bono legal services on an immediate and as needed basis for tenants on the fringe of being evicted. Dockets have swelled to more than 125 eviction cases on average per week in some of the Marion County Township Courts. As a result, demand has increased for immediate pro bono volunteers to help with this eviction crisis.

It’s the season of giving and even during the hardships of 2021, generous bidders and donors helped the Indianapolis Bar Foundation raise more than $15,000 during IndyBar’s Giving, this year’s online silent auction to benefit the programs and initiatives of the IndyBar Foundation. The Indianapolis Bar Foundation’s IndyBar’s Giving featured special holiday gifts and experiences in an effort to give IndyBar members and supporters an easy and socially distant way to start (or finish!) their holiday shopping.

Leading a non-profit organization brings with it issues and concerns that can derail the organization from its important mission-focused work. With the help of the Indianapolis Bar Association Business Law Section, local non-profit leaders will be better able to focus on their organization's more impactful work.
