Director, Facilities Contracting; Assoc. Legal Cou
This position will concentrate primarily on supporting the University's construction, sponsored (i.e., third party-funded) programs and business and financial services activities, with a particular emphasis on drafting and negotiating agreements and advising internal client contracts on contractual and compliance issues.
As an attorney “embedded” within the University’s physical facilities department, the selected candidate will be an integral part of the University’s construction contracts team and will report administratively to the VP for Physical Facilities. In that capacity, the selected candidate will advise administrators on construction contracts and bidding processes, real estate issues, financings, and legal and corporate governance approval processes.
As a member of the University’s internal legal team, the position will also have a “dotted line” reporting relationship to the University’s Legal Counsel for the purpose of providing support to Purdue’s business and financial services functions. In this capacity, the selected candidate will, under the oversight of the Legal Counsel, provide advice and assistance to the Senior Vice President of Business Services, the Vice President for Research, the Vice President for Public Affairs and their respective leadership teams on commercial agreements, project financings, contracts with government agencies and other third party funding sources, payment disputes, intellectual property licensing, and trademark matters. The selected candidate may also be called upon occasionally to provide transactional support to University Procurement Services as well as advice and assistance to the University’s receivables and collections staff.
In respect of each of the foregoing areas, the successful candidate will draft, research and analyze legal issues; provide opinions and advice on complex transactions, compliance with local, state and federal laws and University regulations or policies; and provide legal services on other matters as assigned.
In addition to working closely with other University attorneys and administrators, the attorney will interact with outside counsel, with litigation counsel, with University-affiliated organizations, and with contracting or funding parties, including governmental grantors, and their attorneys.
Juris Doctor from ABA accredited Law School.
Eight years’ experience handling complex business and financial contracts and arrangements, including construction contracts, financings (debt and/or equity), real estate transactions, commercial and licensing agreements, and/or creditors’ rights matters.
Must be licensed to practice law in Indiana or capable of obtaining license within one year.
Excellent academic credentials, a JD or JD/MBA, and 8 years’ relevant legal experience with a law firm, governmental agency or corporate entity.
Broad experience in a transactional-oriented practice is required.
Working knowledge of real estate transactions, capital findings, public contracting, intellectual property licensing, and creditors' rights issues.
Candidates must exhibit initiative and the capacity to work independently, as well as the ability to positively contribute to multiple leadership teams.
Candidates should possess excellent interpersonal and written communication skills, superior negotiating skills, and exceptional problem solving abilities.
High integrity and a strong attention to detail are required.
Experience in public contracting and representing owners in large construction projects strongly preferred.
Knowledge of construction law and construction contracting is strongly preferred.
A background check is required for employment in this position.
