Indianapolis Bar Association, Shortridge High School to Host Careers in Law Fair
Shortridge Magnet High School Law and Public Policy, in collaboration with the Indianapolis Bar Association, will host the second annual Careers in Law Fair on Friday, June 7 from 10:50 a.m. to 1 p.m. Designed to encompass the full breadth of professional occupations in the legal field, the fair will expose 547 students grades six through 12 to representatives from 17 different law-related career opportunities.
The Indianapolis Bar Association's Paralegal Committee, along with local technology consulting firm Modern Information Solutions, has spearheaded this effort as part of the school's Law Week celebration. "We feel this is a special fair because we engage professionals from many careers in the legal field, including different practitioner types, plus careers that do not necessarily require that you obtain a law degree," says Julia Kleinschmidt, paralegal at Bose McKinney & Evans and member of the bar's Paralegal Committee.
Students will rotate throughout the fair, visiting each representative and hearing first-hand about the different options in legal careers available in the Indianapolis area. The traditional practice of law will be represented, with individuals from different practice areas and government agencies as well as judges and commissioners scheduled to participate, in addition to representatives from other legal career options like law librarians, legal researchers, bailiffs, and legal technology vendors. The Marion County Sheriff's Office and Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department will also be in attendance.
The fair represents the second joint effort between Shortridge and the Indianapolis Bar Association this year, as the bar and school worked to coordinate a Naturalization Ceremony at the school in early May.
"I am so grateful for this new collaboration between the IndyBar and Shortridge," says Kerry Hyatt Blomquist, Legal Director at the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence and 2013 Indianapolis Bar Association President. "It really is the perfect storm: as the Indianapolis Magnet School for Law and Public Policy, Shortridge is engaging their students on the issues that bar members work with and on every day."
