Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Can the IBA give me legal advice?

If you need a lawyer, but don't have one, consult the IBA’s Lawyer Referral Service via the online form or by calling (317) 269-2222. The IBA also sponsors several programs for the public to obtain answers to basic legal questions, including Legal Line on the second Tuesday of each month and Ask A Lawyer, held periodically during the year. Click here for more information.
Q. I want to file a complaint about a lawyer - what do I do?
The IBA does not have the authority to independently investigate or act upon allegations of lawyer misconduct. The Indiana Supreme Court's Disciplinary Commission performs that role. To obtain information and/or a complaint form, log on to the Disciplinary Commission website, or call (317) 232-1807.
Q. Can you tell me whether Attorney X is an attorney, and give me his/her name and phone number?
Indiana licensed attorneys are not required to be Indianapolis Bar Association members. The complete listing of attorneys is available only through the Clerk of the Indiana Supreme Court, via the web at http://www.in.gov/judiciary/attorneys/index.html or by calling (317) 232-5861. You might also try one of the Internet directories (e.g., http://www.wld.com or http://www.lawyers.com).
Q. I think my lawyer's fees are too high. Can you help?
If you think your lawyer's fees are unjustified, you can contact the IBA by calling (317) 269-2000 for a referral to a member of our Fee Dispute Panel.
Q. How do I join IBA and its sections?
Join the IBA or an IBA section online by clicking Membership Applications, or call the IBA office at (317) 269-2000 for more information.
Q. I don't understand my dues bill - whom do I call?
Call the IBA at (317) 269-2000, and ask for Kari Hartman, IBA Accountant and Assistant Executive Director.
Q. How do I notify IBA of my change of name, address, phone, fax or email?
Send your new information to iba@indybar.org or fax to (317) 269-1915 Attn: Profile Correction, or mail to IBA, 107 N. Pennsylvania Street, Suite 200, Indianapolis, IN 46204 Attn: Profile Correction.
Q. How do I register for an IBA CLE seminar or event?
Use our online registration form at http://www.indybar.org/event.cfm or fax (317) 269-1915; all registrations must be in writing. Registrations must be received 48 hours prior to an event for guarantee, and cancellations will receive refunds only with 48 hours notice prior to the event. For special arrangements due to physical disability, please contact the IBA at (317) 269-2000. No phone reservations are allowed.
Q. Can non-lawyers register for IBA CLE seminars or events?
Only licensed attorneys, or IBA paralegal and law student members may attend IBA sponsored CLE seminars. Guests of members may register for other IBA events as specified in promotional materials.
Q. Does the IBA offer scholarships for college or law school?
The Indianapolis Bar Foundation, the charitable branch of the IBA, offers scholarships to students in Indiana law schools, but only upon recommendation of the law school deans. For undergraduate scholarship or student aid information, contact the financial aid officers at the colleges to which you plan to apply for admission.
Q. Where can I find information about the IBA’s Bar Review Course?
You can visit our website at www.indybar.org/barrev.cfm or call us at (317) 269-2000.
Q. Can you answer my questions about the bar exam, admission to practice, or reciprocity?
The Indiana Board of Law Examiners is your best source of information on these subjects. Their phone number is (317) 232-2552.
Q. I have an ethics question; where can I go for guidance?
Your first resort should be the Indiana Rules of Professional Conduct, which can be found at http://www.in.gov/judiciary/rules/prof_conduct/index.html . If you need more guidance, you may contact the Advisory Opinion Panel of the IBA Professional Responsibility Committee. The IBA offers free, confidential, and timely advisory opinions on ethics questions. For more information, contact Bill Barrett, the Advisory Opinion panel chair, at (317) 888-1121 or wbarrett@whrlaw.com. Your name, address and telephone number will be kept confidential. If your question has been answered by earlier opinions, copies will be forwarded to you. If not, the Advisory Opinion Panel may take up your inquiry. If the facts discussed in your inquiry are before a court or the Indiana Disciplinary Commission, the committee will not comment. Note that IBA advisory opinions do not have the weight of law and should not be relied upon as a substitute for individual legal advice.
Q. I'm an out-of-state lawyer - can I be admitted to practice in Indiana on motion (pro hac vice)?
Yes, Indiana has a very detailed pro hac vice rule found at Rule 3 of the Indiana Rules of Court, Rules for Admission to the Bar and the Discipline of Attorneys. The standards under that Rule must be satisfied for pro hac vice admission.
Q. I need to pay my law license registration fee and get my attorney registration card - whom do I contact?
The Clerk of the Indiana Supreme Court, 200 W. Washington Street, #217, Indianapolis, IN 46204, or call (317) 232-5861.
