Interpreting the Intent of Advance Directives: A Physician's Perspective
Continuing Legal Education
Understanding how the medical community interprets the advance directives we prepare is essential to providing proper advice to clients contemplating important end-of-life decisions.
In this seminar, Dr. Walthall discusses:
1. What advance directives mean and in whose opinion?
2. Communication between patient, family and physicians about treatment goals and the role of advance directives.
3. Who decides what and when?
4. What “doing everything” means and to what end?
5. The difference between supporting life and prolonging death.
6. The importance of personhood and relationships as a measure of doing the right thing at the right time.
7. What is POLST and why is he talking about it?
(Disclaimer: During the 2nd half of the presentation, questions are fielded from the audience. IndyBar is aware that not all questions are repeated nor captured on audio. We apologize for this and hope it does not detract from the overall course offering.)
