Indiana Judicial Biographies

The State of Indiana is fortunate to boast many highly qualified and highly regarded members of the judiciary. From local courts to the Indiana Supreme Court, these judicial officers conduct crucial work on behalf of all Indiana citizens daily, and are major influencers in communicating trust in the judicial process to the public

In an effort to recognize the contributions of these judicial officers, the Indianapolis Bar Association has undertaken an ongoing effort to create comprehensive biographies for members of the bench. Each wiki-style biography includes extensive information, from the judge's personal life and educational path to their early professional work and notable rulings. Please see below for the biographies that have been completed thus far. Additional biographies will be added to this page once completed.

The Hon. Sarah Evans Barker

Hon. Sarah Evans Barker

Sarah Evans Barker (born 1943) is a United States district judge for the Southern District of Indiana. She was the first female assistant U.S. attorney, the first female federal judge, and the first female chief judge in the State of Indiana.

The Hon. Theodore Boehm

Hon. Theodore Boehm

Theodore Reed Boehm (born 1938) is Indiana's 104th Supreme Court Justice. He retired from the bench on September 30, 2010. Justice Boehm currently serves as a mediator for the Indianapolis firm of Van Winkle Baten Dispute Resolution.

The Hon. Carr L. Darden

Hon. Carr L. Darden

Carr L Darden (born 1937) served nearly 18 years as a judge on the Indiana Court of Appeals and has been a valuable member of the Indianapolis legal community for over 40 years. He is the second African-American, after Indiana Supreme Court Justice Robert Rucker, to serve on the court.

The Hon. Willam T. Lawrence

Hon. Willam T. Lawrence

William Thomas Lawrence (born 1947) is a United States district judge for the Southern District of Indiana. He was the first magistrate judge from the Southern District to be elevated to district judge status.

The Hon. Jane Magnus-Stinson

Hon. Jane Magnus-Stinson

Jane Elizabeth Magnus-Stinson (born 1958) is a United States district judge for the Southern District of Indiana. She is only the third woman to serve in this position for the State of Indiana.

The Hon. Randall T. Shepard

Hon. Randall T. Shepard

Randall T. Shepard (born 1946) is Indiana's longest-serving supreme court Chief Justice. He retired from the bench on March 23, 2012. In his career, Shepard has been not only a dominant judicial figure in the state but also a legal author, law professor, historic preservationist, and arts supporter.

The Hon. Tanya Walton Pratt

Hon. Tanya Walton Pratt

Tanya Walton Pratt (born 1959) is a United States district judge for the Southern District of Indiana. She is only the fourth woman to serve in this position for the State of Indiana.

In an another historical note, Judge Pratt is the first African American to be appointed to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana and the first African-American federal judge in the State of Indiana.
